Ok I have been a gamer for around 25 years now and in that time I have had tons and tons of games. Like many of you guys though I am not immune to trading in a game in order to finance the purchase of a new game. Hey it is something we all have done at least once I would bet. Now that I am a collector though I am much more selective about the games I am willing to get rid of.
Yet when I was a kid, particularly in the days of the Super Nintendo and the good ol NES. I really did make some truly horrific trade ins. Really my parents should have grounded me, sent me to boarding school, made me sleep in the garage, sold me to Satan or something because I still to this day cannot believe I did these two trade ins in particular.
The first game I want to talk about is The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past. In my opinion, its one of the all time greatest video games that has ever been made. I would say it easily ranks in my top ten of all time. Yet in 1992 when I was eleven years old I got stuck on a part of the game and it drove me insane. Now it wasn't how kids have it these days with Gamefaqs or a million other gaming sites. You unless you had a guide were royally screwed.
Anyway I snapped one day and I took copy of A Link To The Past to my local game store. It was mint complete in box and I even still had the map. These days I would bet the game in that kind of condition would easily be valued at around 100 bucks. I went into the game store and told the guy I wanted to trade this game. He must have been salivating at the thought that this dumb ass kid was trading in this game.
This store had a really weird trade in system, but it resulted that as long as I paid five pounds (I am from the UK) I could trade it for any Super Nintendo game that he had on the shelf. So I walked over and looked at the games and I made my choice. I took it over to the counter and the guy did not say a word. He rang me up and I went home to play my brand new game................. Home Alone. I am not saying that I played my new game while I was home alone. I mean literally I traded A Link To The Past for the freaking video game adaptation of Home Alone!!!!!!! What a moron.
The other trade in story that I really wish did not happen revolved around my Sega Mega CD. I had the Sega Mega CD 2 and I had a whole bunch of games for it, but in 1995 the Sony Playstation was just about to launch and I was desperate for one. So desperate that I traded in my Sega Mega CD, Mega Drive and a whole bunch of games to get one. The worst part is back in 1995 these were worth nothing so I still had to put money towards it as well! These days getting a working Sega Mega CD can set you back quite a bit of money where as you can get a Playstation for pennies.
I made the mistake that many kids make where you get rid of your old system in order to fund the new one that is coming out. If you want some advice kids, hang on to your old systems! Anyway that is my two worst trade in stories. Please tell me I am not the only gamer who has made terrible mistakes like this and share your stories in the comments below.
